Training courses

We are delighted to announce a series of training courses running from June to December 2018. These are only open to members of community woodland groups and volunteers within our northern region.

These are all free courses, but booking is essential. Please see below links for more details and how to book your place.

As numbers are limited to each course, only up to two places are available per Community Group per course.

Introduction to Woodland Management & Ecology

15th and 16th Sept, Burnopfield Community Centre, near Gateshead
This two-day training course will be delivered by tutor Don Atkinson and is intended as a beginners introduction to woodland management and ecology. You must be able to attend both days to book this course.

29th and 30th Sept, Risley Moss Nature Reserve, Birchwood near Warrington
This two-day training course will be delivered by tutor Don Atkinson and is intended as a beginners introduction to woodland management and ecology. You must be able to attend both days to book this course.

An Introduction to Coppice Management

24th and 25th Nov, Spud Wood, Lymm
This two-day course will be delivered by tutor Don Atkinson and is intended as a beginners introduction to practical coppice management. You must be able to attend both days to book this course.

1st and 2nd Dec, Whittle Dene, Near Gateshead
This two-day training course will be delivered by tutor Don Atkinson and is intended as a beginners introduction to practical coppice management.

Summer Tree Identification

23rd June, Burnopfield Community Centre, near Gateshead
This free training day is intended as a beginners introduction to the identification of common species of tree in summer, focusing on native tree species. Delivered by tutor Edward Mills the day will be a combination of indoor sessions and outdoors, putting your new found skills into practice.

24th June, Risley Moss Nature Reserve, Birchwood, Near Warrington

An introduction to Tree Pests & Diseases

Sun 5th Aug, Castleside Village Hall, Castleside, near Consett
This one-day training day for Woodland Trust volunteers aims to provide a basic introduction to the identification of some of the main tree pests and diseases affecting key native tree species and will be delivered by Woodland Trust conservation advisor, Matt Elliott.

Sat 11th Aug, Risley Moss Nature Reserve, Birchwood, Near Warrington
This one-day training day for Woodland Trust volunteers aims to provide a basic introduction to the identification of some of the main tree pests and diseases affecting key native tree species and will be delivered by Woodland Trust conservation advisor, Matt Elliott.

Winter Tree Identification

8th Dec, Risley Moss Nature Reserve, Birchwood, near Warrington
You must be able to attend both days to book this course. This two-day training course will be delivered by tutor Don Atkinson and is intended as a beginners introduction to practical coppice management.

9th Dec, Castleside Village Hall, Castleside, near Consett
This one-day training day for Woodland Trust volunteers aims to de-mystify the complexities of working out which tree is which from a bunch of leafless twigs! We will be focusing on native tree species. During the morning, there will be plenty of samples to look at, lots of pictures and during the afternoon, we will try out newly found skills in local woodlands. If time allows, there will be the opportunity to look at samples of different timbers and their uses.
